Strategic litigation is a key strategy used by AmplifyChange grantee Equality Now in their efforts to eradicate female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) and child marriage. Add: Content
Litigation has the potential to set precedents and impact on broader change in policies and laws to protect sexual and reproductive rights.
On 29 November 2017, Equality Now’s partner - Voix de Femmes in Burkina Faso - litigated a landmark case against a cutter, Talato Diallo. The case led to her conviction and that of her accomplices for the mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) of 20 girls.

Legislation is an important step in the fight against FGM/C, but enforcement of legislation alone will not be sufficient to fully eradicate the practice.
Equality Now is combining litigation with grassroots activism, promoting awareness through the media, and strengthening collaboration and capacities of civil society organisations to hold governments accountable and to challenge discriminatory social norms. They aim to achieve legal and systemic change to address violence and discrimination against women and girls globally.
With support from AmplifyChange, Equality Now is also supporting local partners to take forward strategic litigation cases in Uganda and Tanzania to promote the introduction of legislation criminalising child marriage.
