Supporting advocacy for safe abortion services in Kenya
ANMA Kenya has developed a framework for the implementation of post-abortion care guidelines. This is a major step forward; no abortion-related training has been conducted in public health facilities since 2013.

ANMA Kenya has been an AmplifyChange Strengthening grantee since 2017. We are funding them to build their capacity to support advocacy for safe abortion services in Kenya. They recently received a renewal grant to expand their work, which comes at a time of increasing difficulty in Kenya for activists to carry out safe abortion advocacy work.

AmplifyChange is the largest funder of ANMA Kenya and provides development and capacity building, as well as project support to the organisation. ANMA Kenya used the AmplifyChange Organisation Capacity Assessment tool as part of their organisational strengthening review. The tool helped them to identify weaknesses in the organisation around communication and data – and they have been able to rectify these areas using their grant. Our financial teams visited ANMA Kenya to confirm the suitability of changes to their accounting systems.

With support from AmplifyChange, ANMA Kenya has been able to:

  • Establish and strengthen networks and collective work with key partners.
  • Increase collaboration at a senior level with the Ministry of Health (MOH) to support the dissemination of post-abortion care (PAC) guidelines via a handbook and best practice guide for service providers
  • Develop a post-election advocacy plan

ANMA Kenya has developed a framework for the implementation of the post-abortion care guidelines, including training for service providers using the PAC handbook and best practice guide. This is a major step forward in post-abortion care in Kenya, where no abortion-related training has been conducted in public health facilities since 2013 following the withdrawal of standards and guidelines for the prevention of unsafe abortion.
