Strengthening

About

This project works to improve the access and awareness of forest-based, nomadic pastoralist women of the Van Gujjar community (in Indian Himalayas) regarding:

  • health information
  • rights and services
  • birth control
  • maternal health
  • STIs
  • sexual assault
  • domestic violence

This is implemented through workshops and discussion groups for women, and facilitated by health professionals.

Advocacy takes place through the facilitation of meetings involving women, local hospitals and health services.

Being nomadic the community crosses three state boundaries in the Himalayas, so their rights to citizenship and services are questioned by the state governments. Rights-based advocacy therefore, is the guiding element of the project.
