In May 2017, Safehaven Development Initiative (SDI) advocated for the abolition of FGM as a rite of passage across Cross-River State in Nigeria. After discussions with community and municipal leaders, three villages in Boki decided to abolish ritual FGM.

SDI advocate for alternative rites of passage, training women, girls and clan heads in their conduct, to replace ritual FGM. During a public celebration, SDI hosted 486 attendees to demonstrate the new ceremony, accompanied by an anti-FGM declaration by community leaders.
