Women Deliver 2019 Opportunity grant

Opportunity grant

AmplifyChange @ Women Deliver 2019 Opportunity grant

In today’s challenging global environment, women’s rights activists face resistance in the pursuit of improving access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). AmplifyChange responds to these attempts to diminish the progress of SRHR by supporting advocates that build, strengthen, and sustain women-led SRHR movement building to promote resilience and collaboration across diverse and often difficult contexts.

We understand the difficulties that grassroots, women-led organisations face in securing funding, and part of our mandate is to provide grants to these groups directly to encourage women’s and girls’ leadership in advocacy.

As part of our participation at the Women Deliver conference in Vancouver, Canada, AmplifyChange will be offering women-led, Southern-based organisations the chance to present their proposals for an AmplifyChange @ Women Deliver 2019 Opportunity grant.

This Opportunity grant will fund projects that will support movement building for SRHR. We will support new ideas to sustain and scale up established movements or support the creation and growth of nascent movements. The movement building work should contribute to successful advocacy campaigns to advance SRHR.

A shortlist of five (5) finalists will be invited to pitch their ideas live in front of a panel of SRHR expert judges during the final day of the Women Deliver conference on 6 June 2019. We will review the proposals using similar criteria to what we normally use (including the relevance of the proposed project, the potential to make sustainable impact, and the organisational profile and capacity). Due to the nature of the event, we are looking for confident, passionate advocates who aren’t afraid of public speaking.

What are we looking for?

AmplifyChange is looking to support women-led organisations who, as part of a wider existing or new movement, seek to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights. Outcomes should be focused on building stronger SRHR movements and working collaboratively to improve SRHR outcomes.

By movements, we use feminist scholar Srilatha Batliwala’s definition:

“an organized set of people vested in making a change in their situation pursuing a common political agenda through collective action”.

In this funding call, AmplifyChange will support movement building work that contributes to:

  • Strengthening the capacity of civil society organisations to advocate for SRHR
  • Strengthening the collective capacity of civil society organisations to ensure safety and security of human rights defenders
  • Fostering collaboration and coordination among movement actors to develop a shared political agenda and plan and execute advocacy campaigns
  • Increasing engagement of potential non-traditional SRHR allies across sectors and movements
  • Strengthening the leading pipeline for the movement by increasing the diversity of leadership from marginalised groups in the movement (such as people with disabilities, youth, minority ethnic groups, LGBTI, lower castes, refugees, etc.), and developing next generation leaders

We encourage interested parties to review our Theory of Change before applying

We are seeking proposals to support movements that are focused on one or a realistic combination of AmplifyChange’s five key themes. These are:

  • Addressing gender-based violence, including sexual violence and female genital mutilation (FGM)
  • Addressing the causes of unsafe abortion including decriminalisation of abortion
  • Challenging stigma and discrimination, attitudes and laws that undermine human rights, including on grounds of gender or sexual orientation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) individuals
  • Improving sexual health of young people and girls, including comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) and addressing child and early forced marriage (CEFM)
  • Increasing access to comprehensive reproductive health services for poor, vulnerable and marginalised people

Please note that whilst we will consider projects that support all five themes, if more applications are recommended for funding by our application reviewers than we can fund, we will moderate in favour of projects that fulfil our fund benchmarks and results framework.
